I’m not much of a rock concert going person anymore. There was a time when I was going to concerts at least once a month. Marriage and children cured me of that (and a lack of funding didn’t help either). But there have always been a few acts that I swore I would try to go to if it ever came around. One of those was that if The Police ever reunited and went on tour, I would have to go.
Well, they have, and they’re coming to Salt Lake, so of course… I must go. I got tickets today, and I know it will be excellent. When they first started the tour I tried to get tickets to a show in Las Vegas or Denver, but no such luck. But now, thanks to a Citibank credit card and early purchase ability, I have tickets. Woo hoo!
Elena is certainly not as excited as I am. She’ll go, after all it will be a date night, which are rare occurrences anyway. But I was a devout Police fan from early days. Back in the early 80s, while still in elementary school I subscribed to Columbia House (yes… that’s how old I am). I could get 11 tapes for only one cent! It was fantastic! And of the initial 11 tapes that I ordered, two of them were The Police. I spent a lot of my free time sitting in my room in the basement, building things with Lego bricks and listening to Zenyatta Mondatta and Ghost in the Machine. Over and over again. And in 1983 I was 11 years old and the Columbia House package arrived with Synchronicity and things were never the same again. I have listened to that album so many times there is no way I could count them all.
When The Police broke up it was my first real encounter with band breakups. I couldn’t believe that these three guys weren’t the best friends in the world. How could they break up when they should be having the best time ever? Lesson learned.
But now, I can cross The Police off my list. July 19th is still a long ways off. It sounds good though… an outdoor concert on a nice warm summer evening? That sounds good right now…
